El Greco

El Greco (b.1541, Iraklion, Crete; d.1614, ) aka "Domenikos Theotokopoulos"; "el greco" means litterally "the Greek". His early work undoubtedly reflected being raised in Greece. None of this work survives and it's probable that it was done in the Byzantine style. He left for Venice in 1566, arriving in Venice. In 1570, he left for Rome where the impact of Michelangelo's sculpture and style influenced his works; notably, "Pieta" (1570-1572), and the "Purification of the Temple, (c.1570-1575).
